I’ll reveal it from the start.

Best beach to learn surfing in Tel Aviv is Dolphinarium beach, that in 80% of the time, for beginners I mean.
So for private surf lesson or group lesson it offers the easiest and friendliest surf environment to be found in Tel Aviv

At KOBE, we run around 80% of our private lessons or group lessons there, the remain 20% we move to other beaches if at Dolphinarium beach the conditions aren’t good enough.

Here are some reasons why it’s so great to learn to surf in Dolphinarium beach:

  1. Breakers: the beach has 2 big breakers from the south and west so when winds are blowing hard or the swell tends to go wild in open and exposed breaks, Dolphinarium gets the waves after they’re passing thru 2 breakers and become more settled and easy to surf.
  2. Easy access: it’s super easy to paddle out using the current near the south breaker (acting as a quick elevator).
And super easy to go to in as the waves break over a sandbar
  3. The beach equipped with lockers, hot water in and he changing room, coffee and food, easy parking and easy access with bikes and scooters.
  4. First aid point open most of the day just in case you need something.
  5. And us, at KOBE surf boutique

In this article we will review all you need to know about surf conditions and having few surf lessons in Israel, especially in Tel Aviv.

Surfing in Israel is quite popular, as Israel is actually a coastline country.
If you want to learn how to surf, or just take few surf lessons to try, you probably want to choose to do it in Tel Aviv, i’ll explain why in a bit.
Israel enjoys a long Mediterranean sea shoreline and many cities located on the coast.
Because of the proximity to surf and the fine weather Israel enjoys surfing conditions almost 365 days a year.
However long flat periods happen as well usually in between the main surf seasons, up to even 2-3 weeks without surfable waves.
At that time surfers will sharpen surf skate abilities, work at the gym or watch youtube surf videos while drooling on their screens.

Geo:
Israel coastline is 196 Kilometer with many approachable surf breaks, mostly sandbars but also some reef breaks can be found.

Weather:
Summer time June-September with 26-33 degrees and sunny.
Winter time December-March with some occasional rains, storms and 14-18 degrees along the coasts.
Storms are 2-4 days usually every 10-14 days.
April, May, October, November considered as calm months in between the seasons with warm weather and calm winds.

Surf conditions:
Best surf conditions are summer and winter.
Summer (June-September) will provide many small waves, mostly wind swells.
Size will vary from 1-4 feet, easy to surf and not as powerful as ocean ground swells, however playful and fun which makes it heaven for fun seekers, surf students and beginner to intermediate surfers.
Summer and especially July and August see lots of people in the water, free surfers, summer schools etc, less crowded in June and September October.
Winter provides some powerful wind swells which are fun and surfable in the right protected spots, usually we surf during storms, strong on-shore winds and even rain.
Air temperature when it’s super cold varies between 8-14, however usually around 14 degrees.
Water temperature is more supportive and around 17 degrees in mid winter months, so it’s hotter than the air sometimes.

Surf breaks:
Mostly sand bars, scattered everywhere along the coastline with easy access usually.
Few reef breaks but not too shallow or dangerous

Tides:
Mediterranean ocean is a fairly small body of water so tides aren’t a big factor as not too much water runs in and out.
It means that usually surfers do not take the tide situation as a factor when they plan when is the best time to go.
Winds and wind directions are more crucial plus the swell trend (increasing, decreasing etc).

Surf lessons:

You can have a decent surf school around the coastline mainly in the “big” cities but most of them will concentrate on surf Schools for kids, summer and holiday infant camps and rentals and so expect to meet young and unexperienced surf instructor.
In addition there is almost nothing to do in other cities rather than tel aviv in terms of lifestyle, bars and nightlife, restaurants, music scene etc.

So if you want the full package and enjoy your time after surfing and after beach time – there is absolutely no competition,
Tel Aviv is Israel’s surfing capital, hands down.

Tel Aviv offers few decent surf schools, with different styles and DNA, most of them (big ones) focused on young ones and summer (holiday) surf camps, few of the others focus more on adults and group training.

We offer hi-end surf lessons tailor made to your  level and level of surfing from total beginner to intermediate.

Private surfing lessons or micro groups and surf instructors with no less than 10 years in the water (our Senior instructor who takes a lot of lessons has 40 years in the water!)

Surfing in Israel and Tel Aviv has been booming in the last 5 years.
People love to surf here and the mediterranean can produce fun waves year round.
The surf community is live and kicking, many surf shops around, easy to surf brakes, close to the beach hostels and airbnb’s and warm weather most of the time.

Because of that we see a growing demand for surf lessons and surf courses by tourists who come to israel year round.
There are many surf schools around, so how to choose the right one for you as a tourist (have limited time, want to get the best out of your money, receive the best professional guidance).
Here some useful tips if you consider taking some surf lessons in Tel aviv:

  1. Make sure the instructor you will get is NOT a young and inexperienced (non certificated) surf guide who has very few years as a surfer or a senior professional? you don’t want to learn your whole life surf fundamentals from such “pro’s”
  2. Is this surf school you chose focus on adults or mainly runs (summer) camps for kids?
  3. Do you find yourself connected to the school DNA?
  4. What do you see if you check the surf school google (or similar) reviews? Who are the people who wrote these reviews ? Can you identify with them?
  5. check the surf school website / instagram to get more info and see their vibe – eventually you will be under their supervision in a quiet stressful environment.
  6. private lesson? Group lesson? custom made lesson for your needs? how much they are flexible from one angle and how much they show you professionalism in planning with your learning procedure?
  7. Surf Equipment: is it a Boutique surf school with high end surfboards and wetsuits or a place who runs summer schools and rents its equipment daily to anybody?

We at KOBE surf school tick all the above boxes and much more
and we try hard bring in some more extra secret ingredient like our experience (above our 40 years of experience) and our endless PASSION to teach surfing!
